Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian provided an injury update to Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers on Monday.
The fourth-year coach announced at his game week news conference that Ewers is “day-to-day” with an oblique strain and is questionable for Saturday’s Week 4 game vs. Louisiana-Monroe.
Ewers sustained his injury in the second quarter of Texas’ 56-7 win over UTSA this past week, prompting backup Arch Manning to enter the game and play the first significant minutes of his college football career.

The Southeastern Conference announced in August that it was joining the Big Ten in requiring mandatory injury reports for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball starting this season. But since Saturday’s game is not an SEC game for Texas, it is not required to submit an injury report.
Ewers, who was ranked in the top three to win the Heisman Trophy at the start of the season, ended his night vs. UTSA completing 14 of 16 passes for 185 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, adding a 7-yard rush.
Here’s the latest on Ewers’ injury as Texas heads into Week 4 vs. Louisiana-Monroe:
Sarkisian on Monday said Ewers is “day-to-day” and would be listed as questionable on an injury report if Texas was required to submit one.
He confirmed that it was a non-contact injury for Ewers, who went down in the second quarter of the Longhorns’ win over UTSA.
“It was a non-contact deal, which we touched on. The oblique strain there. Next week, when you guys get your injury reports on next Wednesday when SEC play officially begins, he would be listed as questionable,” Sarkisian said. “We are going to monitor him day-to-day and see what this looks like, but he would be questionable for Saturday’s game on the report for next week.”
After going down with his injury on Saturday, Ewers limped off the field before heading into the medical tent to be tended by Texas’ trainers.
Following what ESPN’s broadcast called a 15-minute stay in the medical tent, Ewers went into the locker room before returning to the field in street clothes.
Sarkisian said Ewers is day-to-day, and did not expand past that. However, he did specify that Texas would alter how much Manning worked with the first-team offense this week:
“We will definitely alter that,” Sarkisian said. “And again, that is day to day and Quinn will be day to day.”
Ewers sustained a non-contact oblique strain in the second quarter of Texas’ Week 3 game vs. UTSA.
Sarkisian said Ewers sustained the injury on a throw to tight end Gunnar Helm.
“It was a corner route to Gunnar. He hits Gunnar on the sideline and honestly, that is why no one really saw it. We were all watching Gunnar hurdling (over) the guy,” Sarkisian said. “On the release, he (Ewers) just feels it. To this point, I think he thought was it just kind of go away so he stayed in for one more play and then realized, ‘I probably should get this looked at as it doesn’t feel right.'”
